This is the garrison flag that was flown over the Fort "Fort Sumter," it is sometimes called "the flag that started a war." The fort's commander was Major Anderson when the first shots of the American Civil War were fired in Charleston Harbor. He went to Southern forces under General Beauregard after three days of token resistance. The only two casualties of the battle were two Confederate cannon accidentally killed when their broke. Since the Mexican-American War (about 1845) the Army had followed a tradition unofficial use a template "diamond" to the stars on their flags garrison. The flag of Fort Sumter is a good example of this practice.
